Setting and Author

Setting is important in all forms of writing: for poetry, essay, and novel writing. It gives any piece a sense of depth, but also provides the author with a solid place to stand. Setting aids in the creation of characters and the ups and downs that flow within the happenings of a story.

Setting is also important for the author as an individual. It provides the creative backdrop and allows for clearer thinking. Create a space or find a place that sets your mind at ease enough to write. The setting in your story (or poem or essay) creates the tone, the place you choose to sit (or stand) sets your mood and influences the ideas that are capable of flowing.

I have been working on my only “writing corner” or “poetry place”. The work itself (raking, planting, weeding) has been therapeutic and helps my mind wander to the creative places it needs. However, I also frequently find myself going to the pond near my house to sit and watch the water. It sets my mind at ease. Find the place where your mind is able to do it’s thing, whatever that thing may be.
